XV. APPENDIX B - FACULTY COUNCIL POLICY STATEMENTS

Absences
Studio faculty members should notify the Dean in advance of
any absence of two weeks or more, and indicate how students will receive lessons during the time the teacher is absent.

Classroom teachers should arrange for substitutes in consultation with the Department Chair with notice to the Dean. The substitute will be paid by Juilliard if the absence results from illness. Substitute compensation covering faculty absences for any other reason will be paid by Juilliard, deducting that amount from the faculty member’s pay. Consult Human Resources to arrange for the substitute’s pay.

Assistants
It is Juilliard’s policy that all lessons are taught by the major studio teacher. However, on rare occasions, requests by faculty members to work with an assistant teacher will be considered by the Dean in consultation with the President. Students may be asked to evaluate lessons given to them by assistant teachers.

Auditions
Music performance departments will determine required repertoire for entrance auditions, annual and graduation jury examinations. Studio faculty members are expected to participate in all entrance auditions and juries. The audition for the next degree program by current students must occur in the February/March audition period, not later. This audition also serves as the Graduation Jury for all departments except voice.

Chamber Music
The following aspects have implications for faculty members. The complete policy statement for students is available in the Assistant Dean’s Office:

  1. Coachings will be offered to student groups only by faculty members whose contracts specify chamber music. Coachings begin in October and continue for twenty-six weeks. Changes within ensembles are permitted only after consultation with the coach and the Assistant Dean. The coach should make all expectations clear to all members of the ensemble at the first meeting.
  2. Because of the time demanded by rehearsals, students are expected to register and will receive credit for only one chamber music group per year. Students who wish to participate in more than one group may petition the Assistant Dean for permission. A second chamber music assignment is allowed only if the ensemble members, coach and the type or genre of ensemble differ from the student’s first group.
  3. onata coaching may serve as the second chamber ensemble only by permission of the Assistant Dean.
  4. Generally, chamber music must be coached by a faculty member
who is not the student’s primary instrumental teacher.
Change of studio teacher
  1. Teacher’s initiative: The teacher must notify the student personally of the intention to discontinue teaching as soon as possible after the May jury examination. Leading up to this announcement, the teacher should give warnings and indications throughout the semester, and the teacher’s concerns should be reflected in the semester grade. Under no circumstances will a teacher be permitted to discontinue a student after June 15 for the following school year.
  2. Student’s initiative: Changes may be made only between semesters or during the Add/Drop period in September. The student should discuss the desire to change studios with the Dean before contacting a prospective teacher. If it seems advisable, the Dean will propose, and perhaps participate in, conversations between student and teacher to clarify expectations or misunderstandings. Should reconciliation be impossible, the Dean will advise the student regarding availability of a prospective teacher and help to schedule an audition. Forms secured from the Dean’s Assistant must be signed by both former and prospective teacher before a change can be finalized.

Compensation to studio teachers for students’ interrupted study
If a student changes studio teachers, withdraws or takes a leave of absence mid-semester, the teacher will be compensated for the student’s lessons for the rest of the current semester only, and should divide this un-used time among other students.

Classroom Protocol (Juilliard Student Handbook)
As a pre-professional institution with a mission to develop leaders in the performing arts, Juilliard expects its students to observe the normal courtesies practiced by a society of mature and responsible persons. The standards of the profession are in effect at Juilliard.

Any classroom behavior which interferes with the instructor’s ability to teach or distracts from the concentration of other students will not be tolerated. Such behavior may include:

  • eating or drinking
  • talking to a neighbor in disruptive manner
  • using electronic devices for non-academic purposes, including a cell phone
  • inappropriate language
  • physical violence of any kind
  • arriving late, leaving early

Any student whose actions detract from the learning of any other person in the class will be asked to leave the classroom immediately. If the student continues to be disruptive and does not leave the room after being clearly told to do so, the teacher’s report to the Dean will place the student on automatic academic probation, with the potential of being dismissed from school after judicial review.

Concerto Competitions
Regulations and eligibility for each department are available from the Concert Office. Matters common to all departments include:

  1. Preliminaries are judged by faculty members; finals are judged by outside professionals chosen from lists submitted by departments. Lists should be revised annually by department chairs in consultation with other department members and the Director of Concert Operations.
  2. Students who have previously won a Juilliard Concerto Competition are not eligible while enrolled in the same program of study. Non-resident DMA students and students enrolled in the BCJ exchange are not eligible.
  3.  Competitors must be majors of the instrument, and registered at Juilliard for study with a member of the Juilliard faculty teaching that instrument.

Departments (Music Division)
A chairperson appointed by the President for a three-year term (in most cases) will convene department members for development of policies to foster fruitful interactions among students within each department, to continually strengthen the education provided in each major, and to determine concerto competition and audition repertoire, and jury requirements. Departments should examine the curriculum requirements, including classroom and performance activities, and should recommend revisions to ensure as complete a professional course of study as possible. Departments should consider the desirability and practicality of pedagogical instruction for majors in the department and propose ways of implementation.

Juries (Music Division)
Jury examinations are required annually of all music students, except those registered in the DMA degree or Artist Diploma program. Repertoire requirements are determined by the individual performance departments. Jury Week is scheduled prior to the final week of the spring semester (usually the first week in May).

•  Graduation Jury — Required for completion of the Bachelor of Music degree and Diploma, Master of Music degree and Graduate Diploma. Current students who audition for new programs may use that March audition as their Graduation Jury (except for Voice majors).

• Sophomore Jury — The grade of “B-” or below will prompt a review by members of the Administration, the teacher and the department chair to determine the advisability of the student’s continued enrollment at Juilliard. A comprehensive evaluation of all performance activities to date will be a part of that review.

Master Classes
Music departments are encouraged, after consultation with the Dean, to present departmental faculty members teaching master classes, giving public instruction to students who request it. Compensation for master class teachers will be $250.

Minutes of Faculty Council are available in the Faculty Lounge and the Dean’s Office within the month following a meeting.

Orientation Meetings by departments for new students will be held at 3:00 on the afternoon of the Fall Semester Convocation. The Registrar’s Office assigns rooms for these meetings which are moderated by the Department Chair.
