FINANCIAL AID
Aristotle once said, "To give money is an easy matter and in any man's power. But to decide to whom to give it, and how large and when, and for what purpose and how, is neither in every man's power nor an easy matter." The Juilliard School provides financial support (based on need and merit) through scholarships, loans, and work-study to all deserving students. In the pursuit to impart as much support as possible, nearly 95 percent of Juilliard students receive some form of financial assistance.
FINANCIAL AID OFFICE
Financial aid applications are obtained from the Financial Aid Office (Room 235). Applications for the following year are usually available in December of the previous year. All students are encouraged to submit applications. Those who have questions should come to the Financial Aid window, where staff members are ready to help; or visit the Financial Aid area on the Juilliard Web site or on the Juilliard Intranet.
What Are the Deadlines For Submitting a Financial Aid Application?
Continuing students who are applying to a new program must submit an application by March 1. All other continuing students must submit an application by April 1. U.S. citizens and permanent residents are urged to complete their FAFSA application one month before the deadline.
What Will Happen If I Do Not Submit My Financial Aid Application On Time?
Late applications may result in:
your tuition bill not being credited with your financial aid in time for payment
late fees of $50-500 against your tuition bill
delay in registration, which may result in loss of semester's credit
reduction in amount of scholarship and other aid awarded
international students may not be able to certify their finances in time to obtain student visas
Who Makes the Decisions About Financial Aid?
A Financial Aid Committee makes the decisions about each student's aid package. The members of the committee vary, depending upon which students are being discussed. At different times the Financial Aid Committee has included: the dean, the associate dean of orchestral activities, the vice president and dean of academic affairs, the associate dean for admissions, the vice president and general counsel/ executive director of jazz studies, the director of the dance division, the administrative director of vocal arts, the administrative director of the drama division, the executive director of jazz studies, the associate dean and registrar, the vice president for enrollment management and the director of financial aid.
What Factors Does the Committee Consider?
The committee considers both need and merit:
Need
Juilliard Financial Aid Application
FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)— for U.S. citizens and permanent residents only
International Student Financial Supplement— for international students only
Supporting documentation, such as tax forms.
Other information, total educational debt, major change in financial circumstance, potential earnings, outside funds, and the student's housing plans
Merit
Teacher or departmental recommendations
Transcripts
Other factors, such as orchestral participation and community service
If I Am Not Satisfied With My Financial Aid Package What Can I Do?
Contact the Financial Aid Office. If you have experienced a major financial change since the time of filing your forms (such as major devaluation of currency, long-term unemployment of a supporting parent, catastrophic illness), you may have grounds for an appeal. You should be prepared to document your claim.
How Can I Find Out More About Financial Aid?
Students are encouraged to check The Juilliard School Intranet for the most up-to-date information about financial aid. The Financial Aid Office frequently sends e-mails to students about outside scholarship opportunities for which the student may qualify. The office will also send scholarship and other important information directly to student and e-mail boxes. It is important to check your mailbox and e-mail regularly and respond promptly to all requests for information.

TEACHING FELLOWSHIPS AND FACULTY ASSISTANTSHIPS
Each year Juilliard awards teaching fellowships to a limited number of graduate students. Teaching fellowships are awarded on the basis of outstanding undergraduate work in the departments of Literature and Materials of Music, Ear Training, Piano for Non-Majors, and a few other areas. They are awarded only to students already in the School whom the faculty have had the opportunity to observe over a period of time. All fellowships are assigned by the respective departments. A few faculty assistantships are also assigned in certain departments. Faculty assistants do not teach but assist faculty members with classes. Inquiries should be addressed to the faculty. Further information on both fellowships and assistantships is available in the Office of Academic Affairs, Room 221.
FULBRIGHT GRANTS
Applications for Fulbright Grants are available for qualified and interested advanced students in music, dance, and drama in the Office of Academic Affairs. Applications are due each year in late September for grants which begin the following fall.
WORK-STUDY
If you are interested in working at school, either in an administrative office, as an usher, or in one of the stage craft shops, stop by the Financial Aid Office for details. Those students who do not qualify for Federal Work-Study are eligible to work through the Juilliard student payroll.
