VI. SCHOOL POLICIES
A. Drug-Free Workplace Act
The Juilliard School is the recipient of federal grants to assist the School in the training of students for the performing arts. As a recipient of federal grants, Juilliard is required to maintain a drug-free workplace pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act. The School is firmly committed to maintaining a drug-free workplace.
In conformity with the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act, all Juilliard employees are prohibited from engaging in the unlawful manufacture, distribution, dispensation, possession or use of controlled substances anywhere on Juilliard's premises. Employees are also prohibited from reporting for work under the influence of an intoxicant or controlled substance.
The Act makes clear that the violation of its requirements will subject the employee to appropriate adverse personnel action, up to and including termination. Violators may also be required to participate in a federally-approved drug abuse assistance or rehabilitation program.
Information regarding available drug abuse counseling programs may be obtained on a confidential basis from the Director of Human Resources.
The Act further requires that any employee who is convicted or pleads guilty or no contest to a criminal charge involving the manufacture, distribution, dispensation, use or possession of any controlled substance in the workplace must notify Juilliard within five days of this action. Such notification should be made in writing to the Director of Human Resources. Such an employee may be subjected to appropriate adverse personnel action and/or required to participate in a drug abuse assistance or rehabilitation program. Juilliard will also be required to notify any agency from which it is receiving a federal grant of this occurrence.
Compliance with this policy statement is a condition of employment on all grants funded by federal programs.
B. Alcohol Policy
The Juilliard School encourages members of the community to make responsible decisions concerning the use of alcoholic beverages. The minimum age for drinking in New York State is 21. It is unlawful for a person actually or apparently under the age of 21 to purchase, possess or consume alcohol. To support this law, Juilliard has developed the following guidelines for alcohol consumption at the School and at outside functions hosted by the School.
- Alcohol may be served at Juilliard functions only under proper supervision.
- One monitor for each 100 people in attendance at an event is required. The department hosting the event must provide monitors. They must be over the age of 21 and are not permitted to consume alcohol at the event.
- New York State law (see above) must be clearly posted near the bar.
- Photo identification must be checked at the entrance to the event. This may be done either by a representative of the host department or by the caterer. Wristbands (available in the Office of Student Affairs) should be placed on the wrist of anyone over the age of 21 wishing to consume alcohol. It is the responsibility of the department to obtain wristbands in advance of the event.
- Bartenders must check for wristbands prior to serving alcohol.
- Visibly intoxicated persons will not be served.
- The caterer will determine the per person amount of alcohol to be served.
- Alcohol should not be consumed in common areas (hallways, elevators, etc.) of the School.
- Open containers or cups of alcohol should not be taken outside of the event.
Please Note: If an employee is hosting an event for students outside of the School and the event is sanctioned by the School (i.e. alcohol was purchased with Juilliard funds), Juilliard could be considered the host of the event. Therefore, the host is required to follow the guidelines above. Anyone found in violation of any of the provisions of the policy may lose the privilege to serve alcohol at future events.
C . No Solicitation and No Distribution
Solicitation by staff members for charity, distribution of commercial literature, or distribution for sale of merchandise on School property is prohibited.
Solicitation by a staff member for any cause or organization is prohibited during his/her working time, or during the working time of the employees being solicited.
Of course, outsiders are not permitted on School property to solicit, to distribute literature, or to sell merchandise. Please inform the Department Head if a violation of this policy is observed.
D. Inspections
The School reserves the right to examine all packages, briefcases, bags, etc., brought into or taken out of the building by a staff member. Periodic checks of such items may be made in order to safeguard the property of employees, students, and the School and to ensure compliance with School rules, such as the School’s commitment to a safe and drug-free workplace. For the same reason, the School reserves the right to conduct reasonable inspections of desks. Employees should not leave personal items of value in desks.
E. Smoking
Juilliard has adopted a no-smoking policy. Smoking is prohibited in any area of the Juilliard building, including private offices and teaching studios.
F. References
References or information regarding current or former employees will be supplied only through the Department of Human Resources. Any inquiries regarding current or former employees, or requests for references should be directed to the Department of Human Resources. Reference requests for students or former students who worked as student employees should be directed to Financial Aid.
G. International Employees
Individuals applying for permanent employment at Juilliard must either be US citizens or permanent residents. Juilliard does not sponsor either perspective or current employees for any type of visa or for permanent resident status.
Under no circumstances should a Director, Administrator or staff member sign a letter or document supporting either an employee’s or student’s request for a visa or permanent resident status. All such requests must be referred to the Director of Human Resources.
Requests for visas for Visiting Artists must be approved by the Director of Human Resources prior to an offer being made or a contract sent.
